Reimagining Writing in Mexico

A Writing Retreat for Women and Non-Binary Kindred
Baja, Mexico
w/ Dr. Kate Evans & Rev. Dr. Angela Yarber
April 6 – 11, 2024

In beautiful Baja California Sur, Dr. Kate Evans and Rev. Dr. Angela Yarber guide new and experienced writers in reimagining the writing process, the craft of writing, and the creative life.

Soothed by the Pacific Ocean brushing the shore, luxuriate in uninterrupted writing time and inspiring instruction within the sacred circle of sisterhood.

After morning yoga or beach walks, nurture your story in workshops dedicated to the craft and process of writing.

Afternoons we offer a second workshop focused on the writing life and plenty of free time to write, soak in the pool or jacuzzi, take a sauna, indulge in a massage, or take a meditative stroll through the desert-scape labyrinth.

One afternoon we offer an opportunity to ride horses on the beach. Enjoy fresh, delicious, healthy meals.

At night sleep soundly in spacious, luxurious single or double rooms with ocean views. From your balcony, watch pelicans soar as the sun sets over the Pacific.

Testimonials

“This was an amazing experience. I really needed to take time out from my daily grind to sleep, play and experience something new. My biggest takeaway came through in my writing.” – Colleen

“Re-discovering that we usually have the answers to the questions we bring to retreats. But it takes skillful mediation and an open group to give those answers room to emerge. The exercises we walked through were very helpful. I was able to reconnect with some of the things that called me to writing years ago.” – Cynthia

“Sharing the writing time, the energy, the breakthroughs was so great and so inspirational.” – Nancy

“I rewrote my opening chapter completely and LOVE IT. I think that everyone else’s breakthrough moments were as exciting as mine.” – Romi

“It brought back my creative flow and it got me back to my book which had stalled for a while. I feel excited again. I have renewed my dedication to my writing…and myself. Thank you, Kate.” – Lee-Ann

“Angela’s creative ability to weave art, embodiment, introspection, and self-empowerment is a truly unique and enriching experience. Angela will make you feel so safe and seen.” –Kyndall

“I extended myself in ways that I never knew were possible. I was able to shed shame, dread, and fear of being a better version of myself as a writer than I ever have before.” –Milan

“I felt broken when I showed up…And I left feeling my weight in gold.” –Karishma

Dr. Kate Evans
Kate has taught creative writing for many years at San Jose State University, U.C. Santa Cruz, and Guangxi University in Nanning, China. She has also led writing workshops around the world, from California to Thailand to Japan. Her inviting teaching style welcomes, inspires, and illuminates.

She loves stories about women’s journeys and transformations, and is drawn to unconventional lives. She’s fascinated by “love, sex, spirit & travel” — the subtitle of her first memoir, which won the Bisexual Book Award. Her two memoirs (Call It Wonder & Wanderland) tell about how she and her husband left jobs and home to explore the world. They’re nomads, housesitters, pet-carers, expats. They’ve also had to grapple with dramatic health crises and natural disasters that threatened to put an end to their wayfaring.

In addition, she is also the author of three novels, three collections of poems, and a book about queer teachers. She holds a PhD from the University of Washington and an MFA from San Jose State University. Kate now offers her services as a writing coach and book editor. Half the year she lives in Baja California Sur, Mexico. The other half she travels.

Rev. Dr. Angela Yarber
Angela is an award-winning author and publisher of Tehom Center Publishing, a non-profit imprint publishing feminist and queer authors, with a commitment that at least half their authors are BIPOC. With a Ph.D. in Art and Religion and a decade of experience as a Professor of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, she has been leading retreats around the world for two decades.

Five of her books were listed in QSpirit’s Top LGBTQ Religion Books and the focus of her work is teaching about revolutionary women through art, writing, retreats, and courses. Her most recent book, Queering the American Dream, recounts her leaving pastoral ministry—and faith altogether — to traverse the American landscape for nearly two years with her wife and toddler. Their journey ends by building an off-grid tiny house in Hawai’i.

She currently resides in St. Petersburg with her wife and two children. Her work can be found in Forbes, Huffington Post, Ms. Magazine, NPR, and the television show Tiny House Nation.
